10 Outdoor Spring Cleaning Projects

outdoor spring cleaning

Spring cleaning is not fun for a lot of us. But it has to be done. As the winter near an end and we begin looking forward to spring, something within us encourages us to get our homes in order by cleaning, organizing and getting rid of things we’ve collected over the winter.

But who says spring cleaning is only for the inside of a house?
The exterior of your house could probably use a little tidying up after a cold, dreary winter, too!

It’s Time For Home Exterior Cleaning

Here are home exterior cleaning projects that will really improve the appearance of your house in Riverside, and, more importantly, will provide much-needed maintenance and upkeep that will save you money in years ahead.

1. Gutter Cleaning

Spring is the optimal time of year to clean your gutters, because a lot of leaves and debris collect in the fall and winter. The pollen count is at its highest in the spring, making a mess in your gutters if they are not properly cleaned.

Plus, bugs and critters are scavenging for places to build homes in spring, so getting your gutters cleaned will help to prevent an infestation in your home.

Gutter cleaning consists of cleaning the inside and outside of your gutters, removing mold, mildew, stains and returning them to a nice appearance.

2. Window Cleaning

Residential window cleaning is a must for spring cleaning. Ground floor windows shouldn’t give you much of an issue, but any second and third floor windows will be tougher to reach.

Cleaning windows by hand is a tiring chore, and will require a lot of tools, not to mention going up and down a ladder! A soft wash or professional cleaning of your home’s windows is the best solution to get the panes and the outer frame nice and clean.

3. Pressure Washing

You don’t want clean gutters and clean windows on a dirty house. This means you are going to want to pressure wash your house too!

Pressure washing is quick, effective and affordable. You can clean your house, patio furniture, concrete patios, porches and walkways with very little effort. It will eliminate dirt and mud so they will not stain your house, and you can prevent the spread of mold, mildew and allergens.

4. Driveway Cleaning

Clearing off your home’s driveway and giving it a deep cleaning may seem strange because you will be driving on it, but actually, a clean, maintained driveway can increase the curb appeal of your house.

A professional pressure washer will do wonders for driveway cleaning, whether it is pavement, asphalt, brick or some other material. Also think about adding a gravel or mulch border to your home’s driveway to really make it stand out!

5. Patio Cleaning

Your home’s patio probably gets the most use during the summer, so it’s easy to overlook it in the winter since you are not doing any outdoor entertaining, relaxing or grilling. Your patio could be in pretty bad condition the first time you step onto it in the spring.

Detergent and water – and a little muscle – are sometimes be enough for patio cleaning, but if there are signs of mold or algae, you need to think about a more aggressive option, like professional power washing, to ensure that friends and family can safely enjoy your patio all summer.

6. Roof Cleaning

Mold and moss are typical roof problems in Riverside. While you are cleaning the exterior of your house, it is a great time to clean your home’s roof too, but you will need to use a different method than the one you use for most of your home’s exterior.

If you start to notice streaks on your home’s roof, algae is most likely the reason. Moss is usually obvious, too. These contaminants cannot be wiped off shingles, nor can you pressure wash the roof of your house. Both of these methods will ruin the shingles on your home’s roof.

The ideal method for roof cleaning is to mist the shingles with a half-water, half-bleach solution and then leave it sit. This will eliminate all organic organisms on your home’s roof without lowering its lifespan.

7. Spruce up the Front

The front of your house is going to be what most people passing by see, so try to make the best impression you can for visitors and for yourself! Returning home to a well-maintained exterior will improve your day, and will even inspire you to spend a lot more time outside.

Clean your front porch with detergent and water or a good pressure wash. Clean cobwebs and mud off of the front door, and think about painting it for a bright look! Clean overlooked areas such as the porch ceiling, light fixtures and ceiling fans, too.

8. Organize Garden Tools

You’ll soon be spending a lot more time outdoors, so spring is a wonderful time to organize whatever you will need for outdoor chores.

Gardening tools as well as pool care equipment should all have a specific area outside your house – somewhere that it is safe from weather and not in sight so it is not a constant eyesore. Taking the time to organize in the spring will allow you to appreciate the exterior of your house much more throughout the time of year when you are going to spend the most time outside.

9. Lawn Care & Landscaping

Your yard, trees and garden bushes can make a major impact on the look of your house.

Get rid of weeds around your flower beds and walkways, till up places where you will be planting in the future and brush off walkways. You can spray pre-emergent weed killer to make yard maintenance easier on yourself throughout the next few months. Trim all the bushes too.

10. Clean the Grill

After sitting unused for months, your gas or charcoal grill could use a good cleaning, too. Leftover grease and food from your grill are definitely unappetizing, but they can make you and your family ill.

Wipe it down to remove leftover ash, then scrub the grates with a plastic scrubber (so you don’t leave behind particles that can sometimes get into food) and a dish soap or degreaser.
